The Story of the Pan America Special

Introduced for the 2021 model year, this adventure-touring nameplate marked Harley-Davidson’s entry into a segment long dominated by European and Japanese rivals. The Special variant arrived alongside the standard Pan America and was positioned as the more premium, feature-rich version of the new platform. It was built around Harley-Davidson’s liquid-cooled Revolution Max 1250 powertrain and a modern chassis package intended to broaden the brand beyond its traditional cruiser and touring lineup.

The model was unveiled in early 2021 and arrived in dealerships that spring, making it the first production adventure motorcycle from Harley-Davidson and one of the most significant new nameplates the company had launched in years. The Special designation signaled a higher level of equipment and rider-focused technology, including semi-active suspension and other touring and off-road-oriented features that helped define the bike’s role as the upscale, do-everything version of the line.

Unlike some Harley-Davidson nameplates that have come and gone, this one has remained in continuous production since its debut. Over time it has continued to evolve within the same basic identity, but its core purpose has stayed consistent: a large-displacement adventure motorcycle designed for riders who want long-distance capability, pavement performance, and real off-road intent in a Harley-Davidson package.
