The Story of the V-Rod

This nameplate debuted for the 2002 model year as Harley-Davidson’s radical entry into the power-cruiser segment. Developed around the liquid-cooled Revolution V-twin, it marked a major departure from the company’s traditional air-cooled big twins and introduced a lower, longer, more performance-oriented look than the brand’s classic cruisers. The original machine was aimed at riders who wanted Harley-Davidson character packaged with modern engineering and a distinctly aggressive stance.

Over time, the nameplate became the umbrella for a broader VRSC family that expanded the concept in several directions, including darker factory-custom versions, a more muscular variation, and special editions that pushed the platform further toward drag-inspired styling. Even as those derivatives evolved, the original badge remained closely associated with Harley-Davidson’s most unconventional modern cruiser.

The model was produced continuously through the 2017 model year, after which the nameplate was retired. Its significance lies in how it broadened the brand’s image: it showed that Harley-Davidson could build a performance-focused motorcycle that still felt unmistakably tied to the company’s identity, while standing apart from the rest of the lineup in both engineering and design.
