MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the FXRD

This FXR-based touring variant appeared in the mid-1980s as Harley-Davidson expanded the FXR platform beyond its original stripped performance roots. A 1985 sales brochure previewed it as part of the following year’s lineup, and factory parts and service literature place it in the 1986 model-year FXR family. Built around the stiffer FXR chassis rather than the larger traditional touring frame, it was aimed at riders who wanted long-distance capability, fairing protection, and luggage in a lighter, more agile package than the company’s big touring machines. The bike is best remembered as a short-lived factory grand-tourer from the early Evolution era, when Harley-Davidson was experimenting with combining modern chassis behavior and more complete touring equipment. It did not become a long-running nameplate, but it remains significant among enthusiasts because it represented one of the earliest factory attempts to give the FXR platform a true full-dress touring identity.
