MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the FXBR / Breakout

The FXBR Breakout arrived for the 2018 model year as part of Harley-Davidson’s major Softail redesign, which replaced the older split Dyna and Softail line structures with a new chassis architecture. In Harley-Davidson’s own model-code listings and owner documentation, FXBR is the Breakout designation used from that 2018 Softail generation onward. The bike was positioned as a long, low, custom-styled cruiser with stretched-out proportions and a drag-bike attitude, aimed at riders who wanted factory muscle-bike styling without building a custom from the ground up.

The Breakout badge itself has earlier Harley-Davidson history: the company had already used Breakout on previous Softail-era machines, including a limited CVO Breakout in 2013 and the earlier FXSB Breakout. The FXBR version, however, is the modernized form that reintroduced the nameplate in the all-new 2018 Softail family and established the current model identity. Over time it remained one of Harley-Davidson’s most distinctive cruiser offerings, known for emphasizing visual drama, a wide rear tire, and a stripped-down chopper-inspired silhouette. The model continues in production, so there is no final model year yet.
