The Story of the FLSTS / Heritage Springer

Introduced for the 1997 model year, this factory Heritage Springer brought Harley-Davidson’s old-school Springer front end back to a modern Softail platform and paired it with full dress, nostalgic styling. It was created as a throwback to the classic Harley Big Twin look of the late 1940s and early postwar era, but it was not a simple replica; it blended that vintage image with late-1990s Harley engineering and the Comfort-oriented Softail chassis. The model quickly stood out as one of the brand’s most distinctive retro cruisers, with whitewall tires, chrome-heavy trim, leather saddlebags, and a deeply traditional silhouette that appealed strongly to riders who wanted the look of a heritage machine in a contemporary package. The nameplate appears in Harley-Davidson documentation as FLSTS/FLSTS-I, reflecting both carbureted and fuel-injected versions during its run. Over its life, the model evolved with the rest of the Softail line, including a move from the earlier Evolution-era setup into later Twin Cam-powered versions, while keeping the same overall identity and visual theme. Production continued through the 2003 model year, after which the nameplate was discontinued. For enthusiasts, it remains notable as one of the most memorable factory-built retro Harley-Davidsons of its era and a modern classic in the Softail family.
