The name’s “M” suffix follows Ferrari tradition, signaling a modified and substantially revised car rather than a clean-sheet replacement. Ferrari positioned it as a refined open-top GT with the flexibility to serve as a coupe-like cruiser with the roof up and a more relaxed, occasional-use convertible with the roof down.
The model reached customers in 2021, making 2021 its first model year. It carried forward the basic mission of the original Portofino, but with enough mechanical and styling changes to be treated as a distinct nameplate in Ferrari’s range. Ferrari’s own communications emphasized the Portofino M as an important step in the company’s ongoing evolution, rather than a simple facelift.
The car remained in the lineup through the 2024 model year. Ferrari said its deliveries were approaching the end of the lifecycle in 2023, then described the model as phased out during 2024 as the Roma Spider assumed its role in the range. As a result, this nameplate had one continuous production run from its 2021 model year launch through its 2024 model year conclusion. It is best understood as Ferrari’s final development of the Portofino concept, bridging the brand’s earlier front-engined V8 spider formula to the newer Roma-era open-top grand tourer.
