Ferrari’s California nameplate began as a mid-century spider built for the U.S. market, first appearing in 1957 as the 250 GT California Spider. It was conceived with American buyers in mind, especially on the West Coast, and the original series ran through the early 1960s in long-wheelbase and short-wheelbase forms. That first-era car became one of Ferrari’s most celebrated open models, remembered for its combination of elegant road-car styling and genuine competition pedigree.
Ferrari revived the California badge in 2008 for a very different kind of car: a front-engined V8 grand tourer with a retractable hardtop and 2+2 seating, aimed at blending everyday usability with Ferrari character. This modern interpretation established the California as a more approachable, lifestyle-oriented Ferrari spider while still keeping the name’s association with open-air motoring and the U.S. market. In 2012, Ferrari evolved the model into the California 30, then replaced it in 2014 with the California T, which carried the same basic concept forward with a turbocharged engine and updated chassis and styling.
Because the California nameplate was used in separate eras, it is best understood as a revived Ferrari badge with two distinct production periods: the original 1957-era 250 GT California Spider family and the modern California series introduced in 2008.
