BMW’s R 100 GS Paris-Dakar, often shortened by enthusiasts to R 100 GSPD or simply PD, grew out of the original GS idea that BMW launched in the late 1980s. In 1988, BMW first offered a Paris-Dakar touring conversion kit for the R 80 GS and R 100 GS. The following year, BMW put the fully equipped R 100 GS Paris-Dakar into the product range as a separate factory model, making the rally-inspired look and long-distance setup available straight from the showroom. It was based on the big boxer GS and became especially popular with riders who wanted a road-capable travel enduro with genuine off-road credibility.
For the 1991 model year, the Paris-Dakar version was updated and continued as part of the range through 1996. BMW’s own classic archives note that the bike remained in production until 1996, with a final send-off in 1995 in the form of the PD Classic special edition. That version carried a more traditional, pared-back appearance and is now one of the most sought-after airhead GS variants.
Historically, the R 100 GS Paris-Dakar matters because it helped define the large-displacement adventure motorcycle before that term became common. It combined the GS concept’s rugged practicality with rally-inspired styling and touring equipment, and it became a cult favorite among long-distance riders and BMW collectors alike.
