BMW introduced the 525xi as the xDrive all-wheel-drive version of the fifth-generation 5 Series in spring 2005. It was part of the E60 sedan and E61 Touring era, when BMW expanded the 5 Series lineup with new inline-six engines and, for the first time in this model range, an intelligent all-wheel-drive system marketed as xDrive. The 525xi sat alongside the rear-wheel-drive 525i and above the lower four- and six-cylinder variants, giving buyers a more traction-focused alternative without moving into BMW’s larger X models.
In BMW’s early global rollout, the 525xi nameplate appeared on both sedan and Touring body styles, reflecting the brand’s push to make the 5 Series more versatile in markets where all-wheel drive was in demand. In North America, BMW highlighted the 525xi at the 2005 Detroit auto show as one of the first passenger cars to use xDrive. The model was then sold through the late E60 pre-facelift years.
For the 2008 5 Series update, BMW renamed the 525xi to 528xi as part of a broader engine and naming revision. That means the 525xi had a relatively short run under that exact badge, but it remains an important transitional model in 5 Series history: the car that brought xDrive into BMW’s executive sedan line and helped establish all-wheel drive as a core part of the brand’s modern model strategy.
