The BMW 328xi was the all-wheel-drive version of the 3 Series sold in BMW’s North American lineup during the E90-era launch of the modern 3 Series. The nameplate appeared for the 2007 model year across sedan, sports wagon, and coupe body styles, with BMW using the xi badge to identify xDrive-equipped variants before the company later standardized on the xDrive naming format. The 328xi Coupe was especially notable because it brought BMW’s all-wheel-drive system to a coupe for the first time in the 3 Series line.
For 2008, BMW continued the 328xi badge without major technical changes in the markets where it was offered. The model sat between the entry 328i and the higher-output 335i variants, and it represented BMW’s effort to combine the brand’s traditional rear-drive sporting image with added all-weather traction.
The 328xi badge did not continue under the same wording for long. By the 2009 model year, BMW renamed its all-wheel-drive 3 Series models to 328i xDrive, 335i xDrive and similar forms, which effectively ended the 328xi nameplate after its short run. As a result, 328xi is remembered as a brief but important transitional badge in BMW’s history, bridging the older xi naming convention and the later xDrive era.
