MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the 1M

BMW’s 1M nameplate refers to the BMW 1 Series M Coupe, a limited-production high-performance model introduced for the 2011 model year. It was developed by BMW M as the first M version of the 1 Series and was positioned as a compact, enthusiast-focused coupe that brought the M formula to BMW’s smallest rear-wheel-drive platform of the era. BMW described it as a new member of the M family and made clear from the start that it would be offered in limited quantities and with a limited set of options.

The 1 Series M Coupe was unveiled in late 2010 and reached customers in 2011, with BMW emphasizing its close connection to the broader M lineage and to the spirit of earlier compact M cars. Its two-door body, widened stance, and purpose-built chassis set it apart from the regular 1 Series Coupe, giving it a more aggressive look and a more track-oriented character. The model became notable for pairing everyday usability with serious performance intent, which helped it earn a strong reputation among BMW enthusiasts.

Because BMW treated the car as a special, short-run model rather than a continuing subline, the 1M existed as a single production-era nameplate rather than an ongoing series. That rarity, along with its status as the first M-badged 1 Series, made it one of the most memorable modern BMW M cars.
