MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the 328iS

The BMW 328iS was the North American coupe version of the E36 3 Series six-cylinder lineup, introduced for the 1996 model year as the successor to the 325is. It belonged to the second phase of the E36 coupe’s life, after BMW updated the range for 1995 with the new 323i and 328i models. In BMW’s classic 3 Series story, the 328 badge marked the move to the larger 2.8-liter inline-six, and the 328iS carried that formula into the coupe body style aimed at drivers who wanted a more sporting, two-door version of the standard 3 Series. The model stayed tied to the E36 coupe through the end of that generation, making 1999 its final model year. Among enthusiasts, the 328iS is remembered as one of the last and most desirable naturally aspirated E36 coupes in the U.S. market, valued for its balance, understated look, and role in BMW’s transition from the older 325is to the later E46-era 328Ci.
