K 1200 R

BMW Motorrad introduced the K 1200 R as a new high-performance roadster aimed at the naked-bike segment, first shown at INTERMOT in 2004 and then scheduled to reach customers in the second half of 2005. It was part of BMW’s second-generation K-series and was closely related to the K 1200 S, sharing the transverse inline-four layout and much of the underlying chassis concept while removing the full fairing in favor of a stripped, muscular streetfighter look. At launch, BMW positioned it as a bold entry into a market it had not previously targeted in earnest, and the model quickly became known as one of the brand’s most aggressive motorcycles of the era. The K 1200 R represented a stylistic shift for BMW Motorrad as much as a technical one, combining the company’s touring and sport-bike engineering with a more minimal, urban attitude. In 2007 BMW expanded the concept with the K 1200 R Sport, a partially faired sibling that added a more road-biased sporting character. The K 1200 R nameplate remained in production through the 2008 model year, after which it was replaced by the K 1300 R as BMW updated the K-series four-cylinder family. There were no separate revival periods for the K 1200 R nameplate.
