MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the ActiveHybrid 7

BMW introduced this hybrid 7 Series as its first production luxury sedan with ActiveHybrid technology, bringing the nameplate to market for the 2010 model year. It debuted as part of the fifth-generation 7 Series and was offered in both standard-wheelbase and long-wheelbase form, positioning it as a flagship that blended large-car comfort with a hybrid drivetrain rather than a fuel-saving economy focus. The model was updated for the 2013 model year with a revised hybrid system and refreshed 7 Series changes, continuing BMW’s effort to broaden the appeal of electrified drivetrains in its top sedan. In North America and other markets, it remained part of the 7 Series lineup through the 2015 model year. When BMW launched the all-new 7 Series for 2016, the ActiveHybrid 7 nameplate was not carried over; hybrid power returned in the next generation under a different badge. As a result, this nameplate represents a single, continuous production run within the F01/F02/F04-era 7 Series family.
