The Audi RS 6 nameplate began in 2002 as the high-performance version of the A6, created by quattro GmbH, the performance arm that later became Audi Sport GmbH. It arrived first as both a sedan and an Avant, establishing the RS 6’s core identity as a discreet-looking, family-sized performance car with serious engineering underneath. The early C5 generation helped define the formula that would make the RS 6 famous: a powerful turbocharged engine, quattro all-wheel drive, and a strong emphasis on everyday usability as well as speed.

The current C8 generation debuted in 2019 and brought the RS 6 back into a new chapter as a modern high-performance Avant. Audi also introduced the model to the U.S. market in this era, where it had previously been absent for long stretches. Across its history, the RS 6 has remained one of Audi’s best-known RS models, admired for turning an understated executive car into a benchmark performance wagon without losing its practical character. Because the nameplate has returned in separate eras rather than one uninterrupted run, it is best understood as a recurring Audi performance model with multiple production periods rather than a single continuous line.
