Audi introduced the 80 in 1972 as a compact family car that helped define the brand’s modern identity. It arrived during Audi’s push toward lighter, more efficient, technically advanced cars, and the nameplate quickly became one of the company’s most important. The first-generation B1 model earned a strong reputation for sensible packaging, restrained design, and an unusually refined feel for its class. Over the next two decades, the Audi 80 evolved through four distinct generations, known internally as B1 through B4. Each generation moved the car further upmarket while keeping the model rooted in the compact sedan and estate segment. The line also helped establish several themes that would become central to Audi’s image, including sophisticated chassis tuning, efficient four-cylinder engines, and later, all-wheel-drive variants. Performance versions such as the 80 GT, GTE, and quattro added enthusiast appeal without changing the car’s core mission as a practical, well-engineered everyday model.
The third-generation Audi 80, launched in the mid-1980s, was especially significant for its fully galvanized body and more aerodynamic shape, which reinforced Audi’s reputation for durability and engineering quality. The fourth-generation B4 continued that progress with a more substantial redesign and marked the end of the nameplate’s original run. In 1994 and 1995, the Audi 80 was phased out as Audi transitioned to the A4 naming scheme, with the A4 becoming the model’s direct successor. As a result, the Audi 80 is remembered as the nameplate that helped transform Audi from a respected German manufacturer into a true premium brand.
