MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the A5

Audi introduced the A5 nameplate in 2007 with a stylish two-door coupé that was positioned as a more emotional, design-led alternative in its midsize range. The original car established the A5 as one of Audi’s signature modern shapes, and Audi later expanded the line in 2009 with the Sportback and Cabriolet, turning the A5 into a broader family rather than a single body style. A second generation arrived for 2016, sharpening the design and continuing the range across coupé, Sportback and convertible variants. In 2024, Audi opened a new chapter for the model by carrying the A5 badge forward onto its redesigned midsize combustion lineup, replacing the previous A4 name in that role. That latest A5 family reflects Audi’s current mid-range direction, with sedan and Avant body styles and more electrified powertrains, while the S and RS derivatives have long given the nameplate strong enthusiast appeal. Over time, the A5 has become an important Audi model for blending clean design, everyday usability and a sportier image than the brand’s mainstream saloons and estates.
