The Audi SQ8 arrived as the performance version of the Q8, Audi’s full-size SUV-coupé flagship. Audi’s own 2019 market-introduction material lists the SQ8 TDI among the new conventional-drive models launched that year, making 2019 the first model year for the nameplate. At launch, the SQ8 sat at the top of the Q8 family as the sportier, more powerful counterpart to the standard Q8, combining the brand’s S-badged performance image with the Q8’s coupe-like body and luxury positioning.
In its first phase, the SQ8 was offered as a diesel performance model in Europe under the SQ8 TDI name, reflecting Audi’s continued emphasis on torque-rich diesel power for large performance SUVs in that period. The model was not a separate standalone SUV line, but rather the high-performance derivative of the Q8, aimed at buyers who wanted a more restrained alternative to the more extroverted RS models while still getting a distinctly athletic chassis and S-model treatment.
Audi updated the Q8 range in 2023, and the SQ8 was carried forward in revised form as the SQ8 TFSI. That facelift marked an important shift in the model’s character and powertrain identity, moving the nameplate from its original diesel-led introduction to a gasoline V8 performance variant in the refreshed Q8 lineup. The SQ8 therefore has a relatively short but clear history: introduced in 2019, evolved through the 2023 Q8 update, and continued as Audi’s large S-badged SUV-coupé offering. It remains part of Audi’s current performance SUV portfolio rather than a discontinued heritage model.
