The Audi 200 was Audi’s upper-tier executive nameplate in the era before the brand adopted the modern A-model naming system. It began as a more richly trimmed, more prestigious derivative of the Audi 100, aimed at buyers who wanted a larger, better-appointed Audi without moving into a full luxury flagship. The first Audi 200 appeared at the end of the 1970s as part of the C2 generation, with sales beginning in late 1979 for the 1980 model year. In this original form, the 200 emphasized comfort and equipment, and it also became the first Audi to use the brand’s turbocharged five-cylinder gasoline engine in the 200 5T.
The nameplate continued with the next-generation C3-based Audi 200 from the early 1980s through the early 1990s. This second era broadened the car’s role from upscale sedan to a more distinctive flagship-like model, and it was offered in sedan and Avant wagon form. The 200 became especially significant for its role in showcasing Audi’s five-cylinder engineering, turbocharging, and quattro all-wheel drive in a more refined, premium package than the rally-derived quattro coupe. Later high-performance versions such as the Audi 200 quattro 20V further strengthened its reputation, pairing advanced engine technology with all-wheel drive and giving the model an important place in Audi’s performance history.
In motorsport, the Audi 200 quattro also helped extend Audi’s quattro story beyond rallying and into touring-car racing, reinforcing the model’s enthusiast appeal. The 200 nameplate was retired in 1991, after which Audi’s lineup and naming strategy moved toward the A6 and related models. Today, the Audi 200 is remembered as one of the key cars that bridged Audi’s practical upper-middle-class roots and its later premium ambitions.
