Audi introduced the e-tron Sportback as the coupe-style companion to the original e-tron SUV, expanding the brand’s first modern battery-electric model line. It was revealed at the end of 2019 and reached markets in 2020, making it one of Audi’s earliest dedicated production EVs and an important step in the company’s electrification rollout. The Sportback body gave the electric SUV a lower, more rakish roofline and a more design-led profile than the standard e-tron, while keeping the same core mission: a premium, everyday electric utility vehicle for the upper mid-size segment.
From the start, the e-tron Sportback was positioned as a more style-focused alternative rather than a separate mechanical family. It shared the same basic model range and market role as the standard e-tron, but Audi used the Sportback shape to broaden the appeal of the line and to signal that electric cars could still be expressive and aspirational. In 2020, Audi further expanded the family with the e-tron S Sportback, adding a higher-performance variant that became the sportiest expression of the nameplate.
The e-tron Sportback remained part of Audi’s early BEV lineup through the 2023 model year. When Audi renamed and revised the line under the Q8 e-tron family, the original e-tron naming was phased out, and the Sportback variant continued only under the new Q8 e-tron Sportback identity. As a result, the e-tron Sportback is best understood as the first-generation coupe-bodied version of Audi’s original e-tron SUV era, and as an early marker of the brand’s transition from conventional premium SUVs to dedicated electric models.
