Audi introduced the SQ5 as the high-performance version of the Q5 line in the early 2010s, and it quickly became one of the brand’s most distinctive S models. The first SQ5 arrived in Europe in 2012 for the 2013 model year as the SQ5 TDI, notable for being Audi’s first diesel-powered S model. That original version established the template for the nameplate: a Q5-based sport SUV with S-badged performance character, quattro all-wheel drive, and a more aggressive visual identity than the standard model.
From the beginning, Audi also tailored the SQ5 to different markets. In 2013, a gasoline-powered SQ5 variant was added for North America and China, expanding the nameplate beyond its original diesel focus. The second-generation Q5 kept the SQ5 badge alive with updated styling and technology, while Audi continued to use the model as the top performance derivative of the Q5 family.
Over time, the SQ5 has appeared in several market-specific forms, including the SQ5 TDI in Europe and the SQ5 TFSI in other regions. Audi later added the SQ5 Sportback body style, broadening the nameplate’s reach without changing its core role as the sportiest production Q5. The SQ5 remains important within Audi history because it helped define the brand’s performance-SUV formula and showed that the S treatment could work beyond sedans and hatchbacks.
