Audi’s allroad nameplate began as a crossover interpretation of the A6 Avant, previewed as the allroad quattro concept in 1998 and launched for production in May 2000 as the 2001 model-year Audi allroad quattro. The original C5-generation car was designed to bridge the gap between a premium wagon and a light-duty off-road vehicle, pairing raised ride height, quattro all-wheel drive, protective body cladding, and Audi’s then-signature air suspension with a more road-biased personality than a traditional SUV. It became one of the most recognizable early premium crossovers and remained in production through 2005.
After the original A6-based allroad ended, Audi revived the idea on other wagon variants rather than keeping one uninterrupted model run. The next major chapter arrived with the A4 allroad quattro, introduced in 2009 as a more compact, A4 Avant-based interpretation of the formula. Audi later continued the concept on the A6 allroad quattro, which returned as a larger executive-estate derivative and remains part of the brand’s current lineup. Across these separate eras, the allroad badge has consistently signaled a lifted wagon with all-wheel drive, ruggedized exterior treatment, and a mix of comfort, practicality, and mild off-pavement ability.
Because the nameplate has appeared on more than one distinct production line and the original run ended before later revivals, Audi allroad should be treated as a multi-period nameplate rather than a single continuous model line.
