The Aprilia RSV Mille R was the higher-spec version of Aprilia’s first liter-class superbike, developed from the RSV Mille platform that marked the brand’s move into large-capacity motorcycles. Aprilia launched the RSV Mille in 1998, and the Mille R appeared for the 2000 model year as a more premium, track-focused derivative rather than a separate model family. It sat at the sharp end of Aprilia’s V-twin sportbike lineup and helped establish the RSV name in the superbike era.
The Mille R’s appeal was rooted in its race-bred positioning: it represented the more serious, enthusiast-oriented version of the RSV Mille, with upgraded chassis and running gear that set it apart from the standard model. Across the early 2000s, Aprilia continued to refine the RSV Mille range, and the R remained the prestige variant associated with the first-generation bike.
By 2003, the first-generation RSV Mille line was nearing the end of its run. For 2004, Aprilia moved to the RSV 1000 R and RSV 1000 R Factory naming, effectively ending the RSV Mille R nameplate rather than continuing it unchanged. Because of that clear transition, the RSV Mille R is best understood as a single continuous production-era model from the 2000 through 2003 model years, remembered as one of Aprilia’s most important early big-bore sportbikes.
