Aprilia’s Scarabeo 200 is part of the brand’s long-running Scarabeo scooter family, a nameplate that Aprilia first introduced in the early 1990s and used for its distinctive large-wheel urban scooters. The 200 variant first appeared for the 1999 model year, giving the range a mid-displacement option aimed at riders who wanted more road flexibility than the smaller Scarabeo models without stepping up to a maxi-scooter.
The early Scarabeo 200 was closely associated with Aprilia’s Italian-style high-wheel scooter concept: practical, refined, and visually different from the lower-wheel commuter scooters that dominated the class. It helped establish the Scarabeo as more than just a city runabout by blending everyday usability with a more elegant, premium character. Over time, the nameplate became one of Aprilia’s better-known scooter identities, especially in markets that appreciated large-diameter wheels and a more relaxed, upscale riding feel.
After the original run, the Scarabeo 200 name disappeared for a time and then returned in a revised form around 2009 for the 2010 model-year era as the Scarabeo 200 Dual Map, later also described as 200 i.e. This revived version kept the familiar Scarabeo identity but updated the mechanical package and positioning for modern commuting, with a focus on cleaner running and broader everyday usability. That later version remained in Aprilia and Piaggio market materials into the early 2010s before being phased out.
Because the Scarabeo 200 nameplate has clearly had more than one production period, its history is best understood as two separate eras rather than one uninterrupted run.
