This 1100cc Virago was Yamaha’s flagship cruiser in the air-cooled, shaft-driven Virago family and represented the largest and most prestigious evolution of the company’s long-running XV V-twin line. It first appeared as a 1986 model year machine, following the earlier XV700/750 Virago models, and carried the family’s signature long, low silhouette with a stressed-member V-twin chassis. Yamaha positioned it as a big-bore, open-road cruiser aimed at riders who wanted relaxed torque and long-distance character rather than sportbike performance.
Across its life, the nameplate stayed tied to the classic Virago formula: a 75-degree V-twin, cruiser ergonomics, and distinctive custom styling. Yamaha highlighted mid-1990s updates that sharpened the model’s refinement, including revised control and exhaust details for the 1995 Japanese market version and related 1996 export specification changes. By that stage, it remained the top Virago before Yamaha shifted its cruiser line toward the later DragStar/XVS family.
The nameplate was discontinued after the mid-1990s run and did not continue as a separate ongoing series. Later Yamaha cruisers used different model names, even when they shared some of the same engine philosophy. As a result, this Virago is remembered as the final and most substantial expression of Yamaha’s original Virago cruiser concept, and an important bridge between the early Japanese-market American-style V-twins and the later Star/DragStar era.
