The Story of the Rocket 3 R/GT

Triumph revived the Rocket name in 2019 with a completely new generation of its flagship muscle cruiser, launching the Rocket 3 in R and GT forms after a long gap since the earlier Rocket III era. The new machine kept the model’s reputation for outsized presence and massive torque, but it was built around an all-new aluminum chassis, modern rider electronics, and Triumph’s largest production triple engine to date. The range was positioned with two distinct personalities: the R as the more upright, road-focused version, and the GT as the relaxed, touring-leaning variant with a lower, more laid-back riding position.

The 2019 Rocket 3 reboot was important for Triumph because it was not just a styling update or a minor evolution of the old Rocket III. It represented a fresh engineering direction and re-established the Rocket as a modern halo motorcycle for the brand. Triumph expanded the line with special editions and cosmetic packages over the following years, but the core Rocket 3 R and GT formula remained the same: a heavyweight British performance cruiser focused on big-displacement character, strong road presence, and high-end finish.

For model-year 2025, Triumph replaced the Rocket 3 R and GT nameplates with Rocket 3 Storm R and GT, marking the end of the original 2019-era R/GT naming. As a result, the Rocket 3 R/GT should be treated as a single continuous production run from its 2019 introduction through 2024.
