MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the bZ

Toyota’s bZ nameplate arrived for the 2026 model year, when the brand simplified the earlier bZ4X designation to bZ for its all-electric compact SUV. The vehicle is part of Toyota’s broader “Beyond Zero” electrification strategy, but the bZ badge itself is the production successor to the original bZ4X line rather than a separate historical model. Toyota’s official materials describe the 2026 bZ as a renamed and updated version of the earlier model, with revised styling, upgraded charging capability, and range and output improvements. The first bZ4X reached the market for 2023, and Toyota carried that name through the 2025 model year before switching to bZ for 2026.

As a nameplate, bZ is still in its early life. It represents Toyota’s mainstream battery-electric SUV entry in the U.S. market, positioned as an everyday-use EV rather than a niche compliance car. The 2026 update also marked Toyota’s move toward newer charging standards and a more streamlined trim strategy, helping define the model as the next stage of the company’s BEV rollout. Because the bZ badge is currently in production, its last model year is not yet known.
