This nameplate first appeared for the 2009 model year as a North American-market crossover positioned between a sedan and an SUV, with Toyota pitching it as a stylish five-passenger alternative to a conventional family vehicle. The original run lasted through the 2015 model year, after which the nameplate was discontinued. Toyota later revived it for the 2021 model year with an all-new design and a very different mission: a more premium, hybrid-only midsize crossover built on Toyota’s newer global architecture. That revival gave the vehicle a cleaner, more upscale character than the original, while keeping the model focused on comfort, efficiency, and everyday versatility. The modern version continued through the 2024 model year before Toyota discontinued it again. Because the nameplate was brought back after a production gap, it has two separate production periods rather than one continuous run.
