SP600

This nameplate was introduced for the 1985 model year as the final and largest evolution of Suzuki’s SP dual-purpose single-cylinder line. It followed the earlier SP500 era, which had ended a couple of years before, and represented Suzuki’s effort to keep a street-legal, big-bore dual-sport in the lineup after the company had shifted away from the earlier SP/DR 500-class machines. The SP600 was positioned as a practical, go-anywhere motorcycle with the character of a large four-stroke single, aimed at riders who wanted a machine that could handle pavement, dirt roads, and light trail use without being a pure enduro or a dedicated street bike. Contemporary historical references and Suzuki’s own identification materials indicate that the SP600 was a one-year model, after which the SP designation disappeared from Suzuki’s lineup. That brief production window has made it one of the rarer members of Suzuki’s 1980s dual-purpose family and a notable transitional model in the company’s off-road and adventure-oriented history.
