Suzuki introduced this big-bore cruiser in 1987 as the VS1400, extending the Intruder family upward from the smaller VS750. It was conceived as a low-slung, long-wheelbase V-twin cruiser with a strong emphasis on relaxed highway riding, clean styling, chrome-heavy presentation, and shaft drive. That original concept gave the model a distinctive place in Suzuki’s lineup at a time when Japanese manufacturers were still defining their own take on the American-style cruiser.
Across its life, the motorcycle evolved gradually rather than through dramatic redesigns. The nameplate’s history is also tied to Suzuki’s global naming strategy. In some markets it remained an Intruder 1400/VS1400 through the 2004 model year, while in North America it was rebranded for 2005 as the Boulevard S83. For the purposes of the Intruder 1400 nameplate itself, the continuous production run began in 1987 and ended in 2004. It stands as one of the most recognizable large Intruder-era cruisers and a key bridge between Suzuki’s mid-size cruiser models and its later heavyweight boulevard lineup.
