The Delta 88 nameplate first appeared in the 1965 model year as a separate 88-series offering from Oldsmobile, positioned as a more upscale full-size car beneath the top-trim Ninety-Eight. It quickly became one of the division’s core big cars, available in the familiar body styles of the era and known for its smooth, V8-powered, rear-wheel-drive character. Through the 1970s, the Delta 88 was a mainstream Oldsmobile staple and, in many years, the volume full-size choice for buyers who wanted a substantial, comfortable American sedan or coupe without stepping up to a Ninety-Eight.
The original rear-wheel-drive Delta 88 run carried through the downsized full-size Oldsmobile years, ending in the mid-1980s as GM shifted the 88 line to a front-wheel-drive platform. At that point the nameplate was temporarily replaced by Delta 88 Royale / Eighty-Eight Royale branding. The Delta 88 badge later returned on the late-1980s front-wheel-drive generation before the 88 family was eventually renamed again and then retired.
