Introduced for the 1991 model year, this nameplate marked the brand’s entry into the midsize SUV market as a more upscale, truck-based alternative to the Chevrolet S-10 Blazer. The original version used GM’s four-door S-10 Blazer architecture and was positioned as a premium utility vehicle, emphasizing comfort, appearance, and all-weather capability rather than rugged off-road focus. It quickly became one of the division’s most distinctive late-era products because it translated the brand’s traditional upscale image into a then-new kind of vehicle.
Production did not continue as one uninterrupted run. After the first generation concluded, the nameplate skipped the 1995 model year and returned for 1996 on a newer platform. That revival brought a more modern, rounded design and kept the vehicle in the luxury-SUV role, while continuing to share its basic engineering with GM’s other midsize body-on-frame utilities. A third and final generation arrived for 2002, moving to the GMT360 family and giving the vehicle a more contemporary interior and road-oriented character.
The final model years coincided with the end of the Oldsmobile division itself, and this SUV became one of the last new products associated with the marque. Production ended in 2004, closing out a nameplate that had evolved from a badge of upscale truck-based utility into a final-era premium midsize SUV.
