This compact front-wheel-drive nameplate arrived for the 1992 model year as the division’s replacement for the Cutlass Calais. It was part of GM’s N-body family, sharing its basic architecture with related compact coupes and sedans from other GM divisions, but it was positioned as the more upscale, enthusiast-friendly choice in the lineup. The car was offered in sedan and coupe body styles, and the range included sporty variants that helped give the nameplate a stronger performance identity than many of its segment rivals. In its early years, the line drew attention for available high-revving four-cylinder power and for the limited-production performance-oriented SCX version, which made it memorable among 1990s compact GM offerings. The nameplate remained in production through the 1998 model year, after which it was replaced for 1999 by a new compact Oldsmobile entry.
