This adventure-touring nameplate was introduced by Moto Guzzi for the 2008 model year after its 2007 EICMA debut, marking the brand’s return to the maxi-enduro segment. The motorcycle took its name from the famous Stelvio Pass in northern Italy, a fitting reference for a model intended for long-distance travel on and off paved roads. From the start, it was positioned as a large-displacement, shaft-driven touring machine with a distinctly Guzzi character rather than a pure dirt bike, aimed at riders who wanted comfort, range and road-biased adventure capability in one package.
The original run belongs to the first-generation Stelvio family and is identified by the 1200 4V designation, reflecting its four-valve-per-cylinder engine architecture. Over its life, the model evolved through updates and related variants, including the more adventure-focused NTX versions and later revisions that moved the line toward the 8V era. Even so, the 1200 4V remains the original Stelvio variant that established the model’s identity: a tall, large-capacity travel motorcycle with Moto Guzzi’s longitudinal V-twin layout and cardan shaft final drive.
Production of this first-generation Stelvio ended in 2016, when Euro 4 requirements effectively closed the chapter on the air-/oil-cooled 1200 platform. Although Moto Guzzi later revived the Stelvio name on an all-new machine, that newer motorcycle is a separate generation and should not be confused with the original 1200 4V model.
