The Story of the Galant

This Mitsubishi nameplate began in 1969 as the Colt Galant, introduced in Japan as the first car to carry the Galant badge. Over time it grew from a compact sedan line into a broader family of passenger cars that reflected Mitsubishi’s changing market strategy and engineering priorities. Early Galants established the model’s identity as a stylish, mainstream family car, while later generations moved the badge into more upscale, larger, and more technically advanced territory. The lineage also spawned notable offshoots and performance-focused variants, including the Galant GTO and Galant FTO coupes, the Galant Σ era in the 1970s and early 1980s, and the later turbocharged and all-wheel-drive Galant VR-4, which became especially significant in Mitsubishi’s motorsport story. In its final years, the Galant name was used on a midsize sedan sold in North America before production ended after the 2012 model year. The result was one of Mitsubishi’s longest-running passenger-car nameplates, spanning multiple eras of the company’s history without a documented production revival.
