Mitsubishi’s one-ton pickup lineage began in 1978 with the Forte, which was sold in export markets under names including Mitsubishi Truck and L200. It was the brand’s first global compact pickup aimed at buyers who needed a durable workhorse that could also serve everyday use. The first-generation truck was introduced as a simple single-cab model, then expanded in 1980 with part-time 4WD, an important step that helped establish Mitsubishi’s reputation for compact off-road-capable pickups. That early 4WD hardware became an important foundation for later Mitsubishi utility vehicles.
The original truck was known for its tough, practical character and a broad spread of export-market applications. Mitsubishi promoted it in markets ranging from Japan and North America to other overseas regions, with different engine and equipment combinations depending on destination. In North America it helped define Mitsubishi’s small-pickup presence, while in other regions it built the company’s pickup reputation under the L200 badge.
A full model change arrived in 1986, bringing a more modern body and a wider range of cab and drivetrain configurations. After that redesign, the nameplate was gradually replaced in many markets by later identities such as Strada, Mighty Max, and eventually Triton/L200, marking the end of the original Mitsubishi Truck era and the beginning of the pickup line’s second generation.
