MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the Precis

Introduced for the 1987 model year, this U.S.-market entry in Mitsubishi’s lineup was a badge-engineered version of the Hyundai Excel, created to give the brand a low-priced subcompact while Japanese-built import quotas constrained some other small Mitsubishi models. It arrived as a simple front-wheel-drive hatchback and was positioned below the Mirage as the dealer body’s most affordable passenger car. Early versions were offered in multiple hatchback configurations, including three-door and five-door body styles, with a sportier trim added later. When Mitsubishi began building the Mirage in the United States, the car was narrowed to a single basic hatchback format and continued as a value-oriented “price leader” through the early 1990s. A small, modestly equipped, and largely utilitarian model, it became a curious footnote in Mitsubishi history because its market life was tied less to brand identity than to import policy and badge engineering. The nameplate ended after the 1994 model year.
