This five-door hatchback was Mitsubishi’s sportier, more practical take on the Lancer family. Mitsubishi launched the body style in late 2008 in Japan and other markets as the Galant Fortis Sportback, and it was also marketed in export markets under the Lancer Sportback name. The idea was to pair the driving character of the Lancer sedan with a more versatile rear hatch and a coupe-like roofline, giving the car a distinct position between a conventional compact sedan and a small wagon.
The model arrived as part of the eighth-generation Lancer era, sharing its core architecture with the sedan but adding a much more distinctive rear body. Mitsubishi treated the Sportback as a premium-value hatch, aiming it at buyers who wanted the Lancer’s familiar mechanical package in a more expressive shape. In some markets, including North America, it appeared later than its original Japanese introduction and was offered there as a 2010 model year vehicle.
The Sportback became notable among enthusiasts because it preserved the Lancer’s sporty image while offering the extra utility of a liftback-style cargo opening. Higher-performance versions and special trims followed the same general formula as the sedan, reinforcing the idea that the hatchback was not merely a cosmetic variant but part of Mitsubishi’s broader effort to give the Lancer line more style and flexibility. It remained a relatively uncommon body style in the compact-car segment, which helped it stand out within Mitsubishi’s lineup.
