This Mercedes-Benz large luxury coupé nameplate entered the modern era with the C215 generation, which premiered at the Geneva Motor Show in March 1999 and reached customers later that year. It was conceived as the two-door flagship counterpart to the S-Class, combining grand-touring comfort, advanced technology and a more formal, exclusive character than Mercedes-Benz’s mainstream coupes. The C215 was notable for introducing Active Body Control, a major chassis innovation that became one of the model’s defining technical calling cards, alongside a strong focus on safety and luxury appointments. AMG versions soon expanded the range, giving the nameplate added enthusiast appeal.
The second and final generation, the C216, arrived for the 2007 model year and continued the formula with a more modern interpretation of the same top-tier coupé concept. It retained the role of Mercedes-Benz’s prestigious two-door grand tourer, bridging tradition and innovation with updated styling, electronics and more refined luxury features. Over time, the model remained closely tied to the brand’s uppermost product tier and to the broader S-Class family.
Production ended in 2014, when Mercedes-Benz replaced it with the S-Class Coupé. Because the nameplate ran as one continuous line from its late-1990s debut until that changeover, it does not have multiple separate production periods.
