MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the AMG GT

Mercedes-AMG’s GT nameplate began with the company’s purpose-built two-door sports car, first produced in 2014 and launched for the 2015 model year. It arrived as the brand’s second fully in-house developed sports car after the SLS AMG, and it quickly became a core AMG halo model, offered in coupe and roadster forms and later in higher-performance derivatives such as the GT S, GT C, GT R and GT Black Series. The original generation established the car’s identity as a front-engine, rear-drive AMG flagship focused on track-capable performance and long-hood grand touring proportions.

After that first production run ended, Mercedes-AMG brought the name back with a thoroughly redesigned second generation unveiled in 2023 and sold as a later-model-year GT Coupé. This revived car shifted the formula toward a more usable 2+2 layout and added more everyday practicality while keeping the model’s emphasis on high performance and distinctive AMG character. Because the nameplate has been used in separate production periods rather than one uninterrupted run, the model history should be treated as a discontinued original generation followed by a later revival rather than a single continuous series.
