Mercedes-Benz introduced this nameplate for the 2006 model year as a distinctly different kind of luxury utility vehicle, positioned between a wagon, an SUV and a minivan. It debuted in the mid-2000s as the brand’s “Grand Sports Tourer,” with an emphasis on three-row versatility, comfort and highway cruising rather than off-road ability. The first version was built on the company’s M-Class-related underpinnings and was aimed especially at buyers who wanted large cabin space and a premium image in one package.
The model received a significant update for the 2011 model year, which freshened the styling and broadened its appeal, including diesel and gasoline variants depending on market. In North America, it was sold through the 2012 model year, but the nameplate continued abroad after that, most notably in China as a long-wheelbase version. That later chapter kept the same basic concept alive with revised equipment and market-specific trim choices.
Production of the nameplate ended in 2017, closing a run that lasted more than a decade. Today it is remembered as one of Mercedes-Benz’s more unusual modern-era experiments: a large, road-focused luxury people-mover that never fit neatly into a single category, yet showed how far the brand was willing to stretch beyond traditional sedan, wagon and SUV formulas.
