MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the GLE-Class

Introduced for the 2015 model year, this nameplate marked Mercedes-Benz’s transition of its midsize premium SUV line from the long-running M-Class identity to a new nomenclature that aligned the vehicle more closely with the E-Class family. The change was more than a badge swap: it signaled a repositioning of the SUV as part of the brand’s core passenger-car lineup while preserving the practical, upright character that made the original M-Class a success. Mercedes-Benz traces the lineage of the model back to 1997, when the M-Class became one of the earliest mainstream luxury SUVs and helped establish the premium SUV segment for the brand. The GLE continued that lineage in a modernized form, with the first version essentially carrying forward the established formula under the new name before the line was comprehensively renewed for the 2019 model year. Over time, the series expanded beyond the standard SUV body style to include a coupé variant, broadening its appeal while keeping the focus on comfort, space and all-weather usability. In Mercedes-Benz’s lineup, it has become one of the company’s most commercially important SUVs, sitting between smaller and larger utility vehicles and serving as the brand’s mainstream midsize luxury SUV offering. Its history is notable for continuity rather than discontinuity: the nameplate has remained in continuous production since its introduction, evolving through successive generations rather than being retired and revived.
