MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the SENNA GTR

This track-only Ultimate Series model was unveiled by McLaren as a more extreme, circuit-focused companion to the road-legal Senna. It debuted in concept form at the 2018 Geneva International Motor Show, and McLaren stated that up to 75 examples would be hand-assembled in Woking during 2019. The finished car was positioned as a no-compromise evolution of the Senna formula, aimed squarely at private track use rather than road driving.

The nameplate takes its inspiration from Ayrton Senna, continuing McLaren’s practice of honoring the three-time Formula 1 World Champion with a car that reflects his reputation for intensity and precision. In McLaren’s own description, the GTR was presented at launch in 2018 as the most aggressive and engaging McLaren the company had made to that point. It used the Senna as its base, but with substantial track-oriented changes to the bodywork, aerodynamics and chassis tuning.

The Senna GTR sits in a distinct niche within McLaren’s modern history: it is neither a road car nor a conventional customer-racing car, but a limited-production track machine built for owners who wanted a more focused and exclusive derivative of the Senna. McLaren later confirmed that it built and sold all 75 examples, making the 2019 production run a complete, one-year chapter for the nameplate. It has no separate revival period, and it remains one of the brand’s most specialized Ultimate Series derivatives.
