MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the 620R

The 620R was McLaren’s limited-edition, road-legal track-focused coupe based on the 570S GT4 racing car. It was introduced for the 2020 model year as part of McLaren’s Sports Series and positioned as an extreme, more track-oriented alternative to the brand’s regular road cars. McLaren described it as a special production model rather than a long-running series car, with output capped at 350 units. The nameplate was closely tied to the company’s customer-racing program, borrowing heavily from GT4-style hardware and the visual language of a competition car while remaining road compliant.

The model became especially significant because it marked the closing chapter of the Sports Series line. McLaren’s own materials and later dealer documentation show the car remaining in the lineup into the 2021 model year, and production ended in 2021 as the final 620Rs were delivered. That makes the 620R a single, continuous production-run nameplate rather than a revived badge. Enthusiasts often view it as one of the most focused road cars McLaren built from the Sports Series era, and as a bridge between the company’s road cars and its GT4 racing machinery.
