Introduced as McLaren’s open-cockpit Ultimate Series road car, this nameplate revived the spirit of the lightweight McLaren-Elva sports racers built in the 1960s. McLaren first revealed the car in late 2019, positioning it as a dramatic, road-legal speedster with no fixed roof and originally no windscreen, conceived as a highly exclusive celebration of pure, exposed driving. Deliveries began in 2020, making that the first model year in which the nameplate was offered to customers.
The car stood apart from other modern McLarens not only because of its minimalist body and two-seat layout, but also because of its focus on driver immersion rather than enclosed-cabin comfort. Its design and marketing emphasized the connection to the company’s heritage and to Bruce McLaren’s earlier open sports-racer philosophy, while still using modern carbon-fibre construction and advanced airflow management to make the concept usable on the road.
In 2021, McLaren added an optional windscreen for customers who wanted a different ownership experience, broadening the car’s appeal without changing its fundamental identity. As a limited-run model, it remained a niche collector-focused offering rather than a mainstream series-production McLaren. The production run was completed in early 2023, closing the chapter on one of the marque’s most distinctive modern halo cars.
