The P1 was McLaren’s first modern hybrid hypercar and one of the cars that defined the company’s road-car rebirth. Revealed in 2013 and launched as a 2014 model year car, it was positioned as a spiritual successor to the F1 rather than a conventional supercar, with McLaren focusing on advanced aerodynamics, lightweight construction, and electrified performance for both road and track use. The design and engineering brief was deliberately extreme, and the car quickly became a reference point in the early-2010s hypercar era.
Production was strictly limited and ran as a single continuous series. The first customer cars were completed in 2013, and McLaren ended P1 production in December 2015 after building 375 examples. That makes the model year span effectively 2014 through 2015, with no later revival of the road car nameplate. The track-only P1 GTR followed as a separate derivative, but it does not change the road car’s production history.
Among enthusiasts, the car is significant for helping establish McLaren Automotive as a serious rival at the top end of the modern performance-car market. It also helped define McLaren’s “1” cars as halo models: technically ambitious, low-volume, and intended to showcase the brand’s engineering direction. Today it remains one of the most important McLaren road cars of the 21st century.
