MODEL HISTORY

The Story of the 540C

This nameplate was introduced in 2015 as part of McLaren’s Sports Series, positioned as the brand’s entry point into its road-car range. It was conceived to bring McLaren’s carbon-fibre construction and mid-engine supercar layout to a broader audience while adding a more road-friendly, practical character than the higher-tier models. Sharing its general architecture with the 570S, it helped define McLaren’s second generation of production cars and established the Sports Series as the company’s more accessible performance line.

The car’s design language closely followed McLaren’s modern road-car formula: low-slung two-seat coupé packaging, a lightweight carbon-fibre monocoque, and a focus on balance and visibility rather than theatrical styling. Its role in the range was significant because it gave McLaren a true volume model beneath the Super Series, expanding the brand’s reach beyond flagship halo cars and track specials.

Production continued through the end of the Sports Series era, with the line ultimately winding down in 2021 as McLaren moved toward its next-generation road cars. As a result, this nameplate is remembered as one of the key models that helped establish McLaren as a serious modern supercar manufacturer outside its traditional halo-car image.
