The Story of the EV9

Introduced in 2023, this nameplate marked a major step in Kia’s electric-vehicle strategy and became the brand’s first dedicated three-row large electric SUV. It was developed on Kia’s E-GMP dedicated EV platform, and its arrival signaled a shift from Kia’s earlier electrified models toward a purpose-built, family-oriented flagship EV with a focus on interior space, flexible packaging, and long-distance usability.

From the start, the vehicle was positioned as the top end of Kia’s battery-electric lineup rather than as a niche compliance model. Its design language emphasized a boxy SUV profile, upright proportions, and a more premium, tech-forward cabin experience than Kia’s earlier EVs. That combination gave it a distinct identity within the brand’s range: part flagship, part practical three-row utility vehicle, and part statement piece for Kia’s broader electrification push.

Because the nameplate debuted as a new modern EV rather than as a revival of an older model, it does not have an earlier historical production era. Its significance lies in being one of Kia’s most important recent global launches, expanding the company’s EV portfolio into a larger SUV class and helping establish Kia as a serious contender in the premium-family electric segment. It has remained in production since its debut.
