The Story of the Optima

This midsize sedan nameplate began in 2000, shortly after the company joined Hyundai Motor Group, and it marked a new phase in the brand’s global expansion. Positioned as the brand’s flagship family sedan in many markets, it was developed to give the company a more distinct design identity while still sharing its core engineering with related Hyundai products. Over time, the model evolved through several generations, moving from a traditional Korean-market sedan into a more globally focused D-segment car sold in North America, Europe, and other regions. It also spawned hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants in some markets, helping broaden its appeal beyond conventional gasoline sedans. For the 2020 model year, the nameplate was still active, but the company then unified the car’s global naming under K5 beginning in 2021, ending the Optima badge after a single continuous production run. As a result, this is best understood as a long-running midsize sedan nameplate that was retired rather than revived, with its legacy carrying forward under a different global name.
