The Story of the Cadenza

This premium rear-wheel-oriented nameplate was introduced by Kia in late 2009 as the company’s upscale large-sedan offering for Korea and export markets, where it was sold under the Cadenza name. It was part of Kia’s broader push to build a more design-led, globally recognizable lineup, and it filled the brand’s upper sedan role above its mainstream family cars. The first-generation car established the model’s identity as a refined, comfort-focused alternative to more established Japanese and European sedans, with an emphasis on styling, cabin space, and long-distance cruising rather than sportiness.

A second generation arrived for the 2016 model year, bringing a more polished exterior, a newer interior layout, and a stronger premium presentation. In Kia’s home market the same car wore the K7 badge, while export markets continued to know it as Cadenza. That dual naming is important to the model’s history, because the car evolved continuously under one Korean-market lineage while carrying the Cadenza name abroad.

The nameplate reached its final U.S.-market model years with the 2020 car, after which Kia’s large-sedan lineup shifted as the Korean-market K7 was renamed K8 in 2021. Within Kia’s history, Cadenza is remembered as the brand’s flagship-style sedan for buyers wanting a more upscale experience before the company moved further toward crossovers and electrification.
